Trincomalee …. Opening Days

I am sure that everyone has been waiting to hear about the fishing out of Trincomalee on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, and as we are sure you all are well aware it is a new destination, it is also new to us which means that we are continuously learning the area, its currents and seasons along with the species which frequent the area. Our last exploratory trip here in July 2013 was one with great results and big fish and as we got going we hoped that the fishing would be as in our exploratory trip.

But nothing in life is ever easy and shortly after we started fishing the area, green water came in with a change in ocean current, that really puts the fish down and we did have a some slow days… once that cleared up though, we are back and rocking, big fish are coming up… lures are being smashed, hooks straightened and lines breaking it is another PE 10 destination for sure as the pictures are going to show you…..

This post is also about the species you can expect to catch.

Kirinda Season Ending trip

The close of a most interesting season in Kirinda, one which saw us have many swings in the fishing and weather conditions, a sign of changing patterns in the tropics is something we are all going to have to live with.
Our last group that we fished out of Kirinda was from Singapore and was lead by Ron Chan, we were a bit concerned again about the change of the weather with as the onset of the Southwest monsoon is unpredictable, however the forecast for the week was good.
The guys on the group had a plan and they were out to catch fish, we had appraised them of the tides and we told them the first day would be a bit slow because of the lack of tidal movement but then getting better each trip the progressed.
And boy did the trip get better as the tides progressed, they wanted to warm up and get the tackle set on the first day so will take things from the second day when they went jigging.
On day 2 the group decided they would concentrate on jigging and we had over 30 fish to the boat, so basically non stop action with decent sized fish around the 20 kg mark.
On day 3 an only popping day we had an insane popping day much better than we expected, we landed 9 fish on the boat there was staggering number of misses at 24 fish for the day including one line break on a very large fish and a huge GT that came off the the hook. The biggest one landed was a 25Kg GT.
On day 4 the group after yesterdays action decided to go with the popping like the day before and the results were even better with 15 GT’s landed the biggest a 42 Kg which is a new personal record for Lawrence and again a huge number missed, this day number of missed fish is 25, Unbelievable!!!
On the last day of the trip the group went back to jigging and we had a non stop session from the morning with 34 fish landed including many double and triple hook ups, this day we landed GT, double hook up of dogthooth tuna, bludger trevally, gold spot trevally all to a decent size of about 20 kg

Telling the truth- GT weights

Gamefishing Asia’s fundamental operating principles are ethical sport-fishing, conservation and honestly in all our dealings.

Especially in regard to GT’s weight, measurements and sizes, yes we do know that after a hard fight with a great Geet once you see it on deck with the adrenalin still high there is the tendency to over estimate the weight and given how hard GT’s fight they seem a lot bigger than they actually are.

There is also the time factor of getting the fish back into the water set to swim away safely after the hook removal and photographs, the more GT’s released the better for the fishery.

Is there a simple way to do this, on a rocking boat and fast? the answer is yes, all you need is a good tape measure and two simple measurements given below:

1 Length from Centre of lower Jaw to fork of tail in centimetres (cm.)
2 Girth just behind pectoral fin in centimetres (cm.)

Shown again in the pictures below to highlight

blog1

Picture showing length measurement from Centre of lower Jaw to fork of tail above

blog-2

Picture showing girth measurement behind pectoral fin above (remember to double if you measure only one side)

Now that you have the measurements how do you get the weight, there is a simple formula that can be used to calculate weight and has been proven time and time again to be accurate to +/- 5% here it is below:

Length x Girth x Girth x 2.74/100000 (fish to 30kg)
Length x Girth x Girth x 2.70/100000 (fish to 40kg)
Length x Girth x Girth x 2.60/100000 (fish to 50kg)

All measurements in cm

A lot of anglers are surprised at the actual weights of the landed fish, but it is our opinion that the real weight of the fish makes landing that monster that much more of a valuable and prized catch.
